How to tell if Coffee Beans are bad?
- Smell
Fresh coffee beans emit a rich, aromatic scent. If they smell musty, moldy, or have little to no aroma, they're likely stale or spoiled.
- Appearance
Check for discoloration, oiliness, or a shiny surface on the beans—these signs indicate that the oils have started to go rancid. Fresh beans should look dry and have a matte finish.
- Texture
Press a few beans between your fingers. Fresh beans should feel crisp and rigid. If they feel soft or spongy, they've lost their freshness.
- Taste
Brew a small amount and taste it. Stale beans will taste flat, bland, and might have off-flavors like mustiness or sourness. Fresh beans should taste vibrant and flavorful.
- Blooming
When brewing fresh beans, you should see a "bloom" or foam form on top of the brew. Little to no bloom indicates the beans are stale.
- Valve Test
Place some whole beans in a Ziploc bag, remove the air, and seal it overnight. If the bag inflates from gas release, the beans are still fresh. A flat bag means they're stale.
How should I store ground coffee to extend its shelf life?
The best way to store ground coffee to keep it fresh longer is by storing it in your freezer immediately after use. Storing coffee in the freezer does not freeze the coffee, so it is always ready for use without any defrosting.
How long does coffee last?
If stored properly, dried coffee can last for months and even years.
